Supportive environments

Teaching and learning is not limited to a school environment.  A plethora of skills can be taught in the home environment, and many skills can be transferred between the home and school settings.

In fact, the more opportunities children have to learn, practise and repeat skills, the more proficient they may become.  It is vital that children and young people are empowered to apply skills across a range of settings so that they become confident individuals inside and outside the home environment.

It may be tempting for parents and caregivers to teach a broad range of skills but this can be overwhelming for the child and can be stressful for the parent or caregiver.  It is, therefore, more useful to identify 1-2 skills to teach at a time and allow these to be established before moving on to another set of skills.
